Trust-Led Growth, stated plainly.
Most B2B marketing still assumes the company controls its own story. It doesn’t — not anymore. Here is what I believe about how buyers actually decide, and what follows from taking it seriously.
Your buyers trust everyone but you.
Only 30% of B2B buyers trust what a vendor says about itself. That isn’t a messaging problem you can polish your way out of — it’s structural. Your own marketing is, by default, the least credible source of information about you in your entire market. Every buyer knows the brand is talking its book. So they go looking for someone who isn’t.
The decision happens where you can’t see it.
By the time a buyer contacts you, roughly 70% of the decision is already made — formed in podcasts, private communities, peer conversations, analyst notes, and DMs. This is the dark funnel: the part of the journey no attribution software can track and no sales rep can enter. Marketing that only operates where it can be measured is, by definition, absent from where the decision is actually made.
Independent voices are the channel and the credibility at once.
Buying committees de-risk decisions by consulting people they see as independent: industry analysts, experienced operators, and the content creators who cover their space. These voices carry the message and the trust in a single act. When one of them describes a category and names the companies that matter, that’s not marketing to the buyer — it’s research. Three archetypes do this work: analysts (authority through independent assessment), operators (authority through having done the job), and creators (authority through audience and consistency).
Attention can be bought. Standing has to be earned.
Standing is the asset. Everything else is an instrument.
Standing is whether the independent voices your buyers trust would vouch for you. It is the thing that actually moves a buying decision in the dark funnel — and unlike attention, it can’t be rented. It is measurable, it is scarce, and it compounds: each voice that vouches for you makes the next one easier to earn. That accumulation has a name too — brand gravity, the organic pull that lands you on shortlists you never pitched for.
Podcasts, contributed articles, research, influencer programs, events — these are instruments for building standing. They are never the point. Any approach that leads with the instrument instead of the asset has mistaken activity for outcome.
The architecture: three pillars
Standing is built deliberately, on three interdependent pillars. Each creates value alone. Together they build the trust infrastructure that puts your buyers on your side before the first conversation.
Original insight, research, and a point of view worth citing. Authority is authorship — the book, the data, the doctrine that others reference. Buyers and AI systems alike cite the source, not the echo. If there’s nothing original to point to, there’s nothing for a trusted voice to repeat.
Owned and trusted channels that carry the message into the dark funnel — podcasts, newsletters, communities, analyst notes, YouTube. Independent voices bring distribution a brand can’t buy: audiences on their own properties, built on trust rather than spend. Owned distribution is the moat; rented attention is the commodity.
Independent voices repeating your story in their own words, over time, until buyers arrive already believing it. This is the pillar no agency can fake and no budget can shortcut. It is standing, realized — and it is what actually compresses a sales cycle, because the objections were answered before the meeting, by someone the buyer already trusted.
Why it compounds
Trust isn’t an outcome that happens after the sale. It’s the engine. Built upstream, before sales ever enters the room, it turns every downstream number in your favor — and each turn of the wheel makes the next one easier.
- Independent voices create.Credible third parties publish about your company in the channels your buyers already inhabit. This isn’t your marketing — it’s trusted advocacy.
- Buyers form conviction.Encountering consistent, credible content from voices they follow, buyers build a positive view of you — with no touch from your sales team.
- Sales compresses.Prospects arrive pre-informed and pre-convinced. Cycles shorten, win rates rise, and objections are already answered.
- Customers become advocates. Those who bought because they trusted you refer peers and become voices themselves — feeding the next turn without new ad spend.
The vocabulary, defined
Trust-Led Growth
A go-to-market discipline that builds standing with the independent voices buyers trust — a revenue function, not a communications tactic.
Standing
Whether the voices your buyers trust would vouch for you. The asset that moves decisions in the dark funnel. Earned, never bought.
The dark funnel
The untrackable part of the buying journey — podcasts, communities, peer conversations, DMs — where most of the decision is made.
Brand gravity
The compounding, organic pull that accumulated standing creates — landing you on shortlists you never pitched for.
A B2B influencer
An independent analyst, operator, or content creator with the authority to affect purchase decisions in a niche. Not a social personality paid per post.
Instruments
Podcasts, research, articles, events, influencer programs — the tools that build standing. Means, never ends.
